Captured in glorious high resolution, this stunning model of a ‘wyvern’ – a mythical dragon-like creature – showcases everything that’s great about professional-grade 3D scanning.

With a broad 70-centimeter wingspan and many tiny, narrow features, digitizing such a complex figurine was no mean feat. But Artec Spider II more than rose to the challenge, picking up fine details, from its tiny individual teeth to the scales that cover its body. Even the bricks it’s perched upon were captured with incredible fidelity – and as a whole – the model features rich, true-to-life colors.

Digitizing the figurine, even difficult-to-capture areas like the back of its head, inner coil, and jaw, took our specialist just 10 minutes. Generally, the creature’s unique textures and geometries made it easy for Spider II to track, meaning few scanning interruptions. To ensure the very best results, the wings were also scanned separately, with a lot of extra geometry.

This meant that processing took 30 minutes, but the results were well worth it. The resulting 3D model retains all the fabulous details that make the physical version such an interesting decorative piece in the first place. Zoom in on the model to take a look for yourself!
